Is the 29er dead?

With GT releasing their 2016 product range this week the question must be asked.. Is the 29er facing extinction?

GT is celebrating 25 years since the release of the famous triple triangle Zaskar hardtail and notably there is no 29er. The Zaskar is known as XC race orientated bike. Over the last two and a half decades if you wanted to go fast the Zaskar was a good choice. Sure over the years it has seen many changes: from 26 inch wheels and  fully rigid, to 29er wheels and 100mm of suspension.

For 2016 GT have made their intentions very clear, 27.5 is the wheel size for Mountain Bikes, for all disciplines.

The GT Zaskar LTD in the image above is a trail version of the new model. It features a new look carbon frame, 120mm of travel, a dropper post and of course 27.5 wheels.

Brands are certainly phasing out 29er models. Giant has all but written off the wheel size. Specialized, Cannondale, Scott and a few other brands still offer choice in the 29 inch wheel size, but with the introduction of 27.5+, how long does the 29er have left before it joins the scrap heap with 26 inch wheels and front derailleurs??
